The following is a transcription of the Village of Buchanan Cemetery located 2 1/2 miles west of Buchanan, Saskatchewan. Rural Municipality of Buchanan No. 304. Historical Background

The Village of Buchanan Cemetery was established in 1899 by the settlers of the Buchanan district of Saskatchewan. There are a large number of Doukhobor and Scandinavian settlers buried there. It is in active use and is owned and maintained by the municipality. The cemetery is in very good condition.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately two acres in size and is enclosed by a wire fence with an open gate. The cemetery contains 99 interments in a single section comprised of nine rows facing east-west. I have used death certificates to identify 32 unmarked graves. There are considerable gaps between the marked graves which would suggest as many as 50 additional unmarked graves. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain slate, marble or concrete upright headstones or flat markers set flush to the ground. Click here for an online cemetery map.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel west from Buchanan on Highway No. 5 for 2 miles (3.2 km). Then turn north and continue on the gravel road for 3/4 mile (1.2 km). The cemetery is on the west side of the road. This cemetery is open to the public.
