Historical Background

Old Haralowka (aka Gorelovka) Cemetery was established in 1899 by the Doukhobors of Large Haralowka and Small Haralowka villages near Blaine Lake. Following the abandonment of the villages in 1920, the cemetery ceased to be actively used.  Thereafter, the Doukhobors living in the vicinity established a newer, second cemetery site nearby.  In the 1970's, the original cemetery site was destroyed and is now under cultivation.  It is privately owned.

Layout

According to tradition, the cemetery was approximately a tenth of an acre in size. The cemetery contained approximately 8 interments in one or more rows facing east-west. The graves were unmarked. Over the years, the cemetery became partially overgrown. When the site was cleared in the 1970's, all traces of the cemetery were removed.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel west from the Town of Blaine Lake on Highway No. 40 for 6 1/2 miles (10.5 km). Turn north on the grid road and continue for 1 3/4 miles (2.8 km). Then turn west onto the grid road and continue for 3/4 of a mile (1.2) as it winds west, then northwest to a yard site at the top of a hill. The cemetery is 150 yards (137 meters) south of the yard site on the crest of the hill. This cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.
