Historical Background

Petrofka (aka Petrovka) Cemetery was established in 1899 by the Doukhobors of Petrovka village near Blaine Lake. After the abandonment of the village in 1929, the cemetery continued to be used by Doukhobors living in the Petrofka School District No. 23 (1901-1954) and is still in active use today.  It is privately owned and is maintained by a cemetery committee. The cemetery is in very good condition.

Layout

The cemetery is one and a half acres in size and is enclosed by a wire fence on three sides. There is an open gate on the west side. The cemetery contains approximately 100 interments in a single section comprised of 10 rows facing east-west. Over half the graves (approximately 60) have no marker, however, many of the mounds are still clearly visible. These remain unidentified. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain slate, marble or concrete upright headstones or flat markers set flush to the ground. Click here for an online cemetery map.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery, travel south from the Town of Blaine Lake on Highway No. 12 for 11 miles (17.7 km). Follow the highway for another 1/4 mile (.4 km) as it bends to the southeast. Then turn south on the grid road and continue for 3/4 miles (1.2 km). The cemetery is on the west side of the road allowance. This cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.
