Petrovka Cemetery - Kamsack District, Saskatchewan

The following is a transcription of the Petrovka Doukhobor Cemetery located 9 miles south-west of Kamsack, Saskatchewan. Rural Municipality of Cote No. 271. Land location: NW 22-28-32 West of First. Historical Background

Petrovka Cemetery was established in 1904 by the Doukhobors of Petrovka village near Kamsack. After the abandonment of the village in 1953, the cemetery continued to be used by local Doukhobors until 1959. It is no longer in active use. It is privately owned and is partially maintained.

Layout

The cemetery is approximately an acre in size and is enclosed by a wire fence. There is a single iron gate on the east side. The cemetery contains 82 interments in a single section comprised of 10 rows facing east-west. The vast majority of the graves (61) have no marker, however, many of the mounds are still clearly visible. I have used death certificates and the cemetery plaque to identify these. With respect to graves with markers, the markers are typically plain, upright marble or slate headstones. Click here for an online cemetery map.

Driving Directions

To access the cemetery from Kamsack, travel south on Highway No. 8 for 8 miles (12.9 km). Then turn west and continue on the gravel road for 1 mile (1.6 km). Turn north and travel 1/2 mile (.8 km) on the dirt road. Then turn west and travel another 1/2 mile (.8 km) on the dirt road. The road ends in front of the cemetery gate. This cemetery is on private property and permission to access should be obtained by the owners.
