Vozneseniye
In 1899, Doukhobors from Tiflis, Russia established the village of Vozneseniye (Вознесение) along the Swan River in the present Arran district of Saskatchewan. It was named after the festival of the “Ascension” held by the Doukhobors on the fortieth day after Easter to celebrate the bodily passing of Christ from earth to heaven. The village had a gristmill and linseed oil press. It was abandoned by 1913 as villagers relocated to individual homesteads or to British Columbia. (1905 pop. 158) [NW22-34-30-W1]
