Trail

District: Trail
Province: British Columbia
Country: Canada

In 1890, a mining town was established at the mouth of Trail Creek on the Columbia River near the Washington border. It was originally named Trail Creek or Trail Creek Landing. It was first settled by English Canadian and later Italian miners and railway men. A small smelter was established there in 1895 to process copper ore. With the arrival of the Canadian Pacific Railway in 1898, the smelter was expanded to process lead and later zinc, ore. In 1901, it was incorporated as a city and the name was changed to Trail. Beginning in 1910, the Doukhobors supplied the Trail smelter with large quantities of workers, timber and brick. At Trail, the CCUB built a three-story brick communal home (1910), shingle mill (1913), manager’s residence and business office, three-story brick commercial block (1919), three one-story apartment houses and a large market garden. From 1925 on, a number of Independent Doukhobors also established businesses, organizations and private residences there. Historically, Trail has been an important centre of Doukhobor commercial activity. Today, Trail is a mining and smelting industrial centre and commercial hub for the surrounding district (2006 pop. 7,237). [49° 06' 0" N - 117° 42' 0" W]
