The Doukhobor Gazetteer - Search Details
Vake
In 1844, Doukhobor exiles settled in the village of Karaklisi (Караклиси) near the Mashavera River in the Borchalin district of Tiflis province, Russia (present-day Dmanisi district, Kvemo Kartli region, Georgia). The name, taken from the Turkic kara + kilise, meaning "black church", is a reference to the medieval village church built from the black basalt stone which abounds in the surrounding volcanic soils. Thereafter, the Doukhobor section of the village was known as Karaklis Russkii (Караклис Русский), meaning “Russian Karaklis". In 1999, Georgian authorities changed the name of the village to Vake (Вайк), meaning "lowlands" or "flat" in Georgian. In the 1990’s and 2000’s, the Doukhobor population was depleted by emigration to Russia and today the population is primarily Georgian. [41° 18' 27" N - 44° 13' 10" E]
