Irkutsk

District: Irkutsk
Province: Irkutsk
Country: Russia

In the early 1800’s, a number of Doukhobors from South Russia were condemned to penal labour in the Irkutsk saltworks and Alexandrovsk distillery in Irkutsk district, Irkutsk province, Russia. In 1818, several Doukhobor exiles were permitted to resettle to Tavria. The remaining exiles were presumably reassigned elsewhere or died out. Doukhoborism reemerged in the district in 1871, when a Doukhobor exile from Yakutsk made new converts in the village of Koty in the Oyek rural sub-district. By 1891, the village was considered the sole bastion of Doukhoborism in the district and province. The subsequent fate of the Irkutsk district Doukhobors is unknown.
