Voskreseniye
In 1899, Doukhobors from Tiflis, Russia established the village of Voskreseniye (Воскресение) near the Assiniboine River in the present Kamsack district of Saskatchewan. It was named after the festival of the “Resurrection” held by the Doukhobors on Easter Sunday to celebrate the resurrection of Christ from the dead three days after his crucifixion. It may also be named after Count Lev Tolstoy’s book Voskreseniye (“Resurrection”), the profits of which were used to fund the Doukhobor immigration to Canada. The village was also known as Voskresenovka (Воскресеновка). It had a gristmill. By 1920 it was abandoned as villagers relocated to individual homesteads or to British Columbia. It is the site of one of the last remaining original Doukhobor prayer homes. (1905 pop. 174) [NW12-29-32-W1, NE2/SW11-29-32-W1]
