Vossianiye

District: Runnymede
Province: Saskatchewan
Country: Canada

In 1899, Doukhobors from Tiflis, Russia established the village of Vossianiye (Воссиание) on the Assiniboine River in the present Runnymede district of Saskatchewan. The name means “shining forth” in Russian and is a reference to the devout faith of its inhabitants. It was also known as Vossianka (Воссианка) and Vossialovka (Воссиаловка). It was a centre of lime production for communal purposes. It was abandoned by 1920 as villagers relocated to individual homesteads or to British Columbia. It is the site of one of the last remaining original Doukhobor prayer homes. (1905 pop. 157) [NE21-28-31-W1]
