Petrovka
In 1899, Doukhobors from Kars, Russia established the village of Petrovka (Петровка) on the North Saskatchewan River in the present Blaine Lake district of Saskatchewan. The name is derived from the Russian men’s name Petr and may refer to either St. Petr, whose feast day is observed by Doukhobors on June 29th, or else Doukhobor leader Petr “Lordly” Verigin (1859-1924). By 1911, it had a mixed population of Russian, Ukrainian, Polish and German settlers. It was finally abandoned in 1929. Petrofka Post Office operated there from 1907-1940. The Quaker-built Petrofka School District No. 23 operated there from 1911 to 1954. The Petrofka Ferry and the Petrofka Bridge were also named after the village. The Petrofka site was designated a Saskatchewan Historic Site in 1959. (1905 pop. 85) [NW30-42-6-W3]
