Radouga Creek

District: Blaine Lake
Province: Saskatchewan
Country: Canada

This creek flows into the North Saskatchewan River eleven miles south of Blaine Lake, Saskatchewan. The name is derived from the Russian term raduga, meaning "rainbow". Pioneer settler Paul G. Makaroff (1887-1971) suggested the name because the creek flowed in a large arc in the shape of a rainbow. Interestingly, Makaroff was receiving the Russian journal "Raduga" at the time. A flourmill was built on Radouga Creek in 1904 as a joint enterprise by the surrounding Doukhobor villages. Local Doukhobor women laboured by digging a two-mile channel to bring the water to the water wheel. The Radouga Creek mill operated until 1910. Radouga Post Office operated there briefly from 1915 to 1918. It was already an established local name when it was officially adopted December 4, 1934 [14-43-6-W3]
