Uspeniye
In 1899, Doukhobors from Kars, Russia established the village of Uspeniye (Успение) along the North Saskatchewan River in the present Blaine Lake district of Saskatchewan. It was named after the festival of the “Assumption” held by the Doukhobors on August 15th to celebrate the bodily taking of the Virgin Mary from earth to heaven after her death. For the first five years, the village consisted of dugouts along the riverbank, after which time the village proper was constructed. It was abandoned in 1913 as villagers relocated to individual homesteads or to British Columbia. In 2005, the dugout site, now known as the Doukhobor Dugout House, was designated a Provincial Heritage Site. (1905 pop. 60) [NW-31-43-5-W3; SE1-44-6-W3]
