Doukhobor Creek
In 1929, a 300-man Doukhobor fire suppression crew from British Columbia assisted Washington authorities in fighting the infamous Dollar Mountain Fire. A near-tragedy occurred when a group of the Doukhobors found themselves cut off and encircled by flames. They found refuge along an overhanging rocky ledge, where they huddled, praying fervently for aid while the flames leapt around them and over head. Twelve hours later, to the astonishment of all, the weary men returned to their camp unharmed. The creek commemorating this incident flows into Barnaby Creek, which flows into the Columbia River in Ferry County, Washington. [32-35-36-E WM]
