The Doukhobor Gazetteer - Search Details
Russian Colony
In 1924, fourteen Doukhobor families from British Columbia and Saskatchewan purchased 140 acres of land and established a Russian Colony at Manteca in San Joaquin County, California. The colonists operated a grape growing cooperative there under the name of "Ruscol", an abbreviation of “Russian Colony”. A small prayer home was built in 1932. The colony was largely abandoned by 1941 as colonists relocated elsewhere to find employment. [N 1/2 21-1S-7E]
