Vozdvizheniye

District: Mykhailivka
Province: Zaporiz'ka
Country: Ukraine

In 1926, 57 Independent Doukhobors from Canada established the village of Vozdvizheniye (Воздвижение) in the Mikhailovka (now Mykhailivka) district of Zaporiz’ka province, Ukraine. The name is descriptive and means “elevation” in the spiritual sense. It was also known as Vozdvizhenka (Воздвиженка). They formed the Kolkhoz Nezavisimiy Kanadtsa Dukhobora (“Independent Canadian Doukhobor Collective Farm”) there using modern farm machinery brought from Canada. The village thrived until 1928, when the young men received calls to serve in the Soviet army. Refusing to bear arms, the Doukhobors abandoned the short-lived village and returned to Canada.
