The Doukhobor Gazetteer - Search Details
Voronzha
In 1861-1864, Doukhobor settlers established the village of Manzhurka (Манжурка) near the Zeya River in the Blagoveshchensk district (present-day Seryshevsky district) of Amur province, Russia. The name is derived from the Russian term manzhurii, meaning “Manchuria” and described its location near the Manchurian border. It was also known as Man’chzhurka (Маньчжурка). In 1925, the village name was changed to Voronzha (Воронжа) after the province of Voronezh where many of the settlers originated. In 1926-1932, following collectivization, most of the Doukhobor population was liquidated or deported as class enemies (kulaks). Today, the population is primarily Orthodox Russian.
