Ubezhishche

District: Spencer
Province: British Columbia
Country: Canada

In 1909, Community Doukhobors from Saskatchewan purchased 550 acres of land along July Creek in the Spencer district of British Columbia. Having forfeited their lands in Saskatchewan, this area was to become their new place of refuge. For this reason, they named it Ubezhishche (Убежище) meaning “refuge” or “hideaway” in Russian. There, they cleared the forest, planted fruit orchards, vegetable gardens and grain fields and established seven communal villages as well as a sawmill and planer mill, blacksmith shop, granaries and barns. Spencer School District operated there from 1920 to 1929. Following the demise of the CCUB in 1937-1938, the communal organization gradually declined. By 1961-1963, the CCUB lands were sold, the villages were disbanded and the name fell into disuse. [District Lot 1025, 1027, 1737, 2657 & 2701, Similkameen Division, Yale District]
