Vanjoff Village

District: Outlook
Province: British Columbia
Country: Canada

In 1909-1910, Community Doukhobors from Saskatchewan established a village near Newby Creek in the Outlook (Khristovoye) district of British Columbia. It was known as Vanjoff Village or Vanzhevo Selo (Ванжёво Село) in Russian after the Vanjoff family of Doukhobors who lived there. According to tradition, one thrifty villager collected slops to sell for livestock feed. For this reason, the village was also known as Pomoilovka (Помойловка) from the Russian term pomoi meaning “slops”. By 1961-1963, the CCUB lands were sold and the village was disbanded. [District Lot 334, Similkameen Division, Yale District]
