Gritchin Village
In 1909-1910, Community Doukhobors from Saskatchewan established a village in the Kettle River valley in the West Grand Forks (Fruktova) district of British Columbia. It was known as Gritchin Village or Gritchino Selo (Гритчино Село) in Russian after the Gritchin family of Doukhobors who lived there. According to tradition, the villagers were nicknamed “Japanese”. For this reason, the village was also known as Yaponovka (Японовка) from the Russian term yaponiya meaning “Japan”. By 1961-1963, the CCUB lands were sold and the village was disbanded. [District Lot 364, Similkameen Division, Yale District] [49.01870° N, -118.50768° W]
