Ostrov
In 1912, Community Doukhobors from Saskatchewan established two communal villages at the confluence of the Kootenay and Columbia Rivers in the Ootischenia district of British Columbia. In flood years, the riverbanks overflowed, cutting off the settlement and forming an island. For this reason, the area was named Ostrov (Остров) meaning “island” in Russian. It was a favorite place of Doukhobor leader Peter “Lordly” Verigin for holding outdoor prayer meetings. Following the demise of the CCUB in 1937-1938, the communal organization gradually declined. By 1961-1963, the CCUB lands were sold, the villages were disbanded and the name fell into disuse.
