Gorelovka

District: Ninotsminda
Province: Samtskhe-Javakheti
Country: Georgia

In 1842, Doukhobor exiles established the village of Goreloye (Горелое) near Lake Bugdasheni in the Akhalkalaki district of Tiflis province, Russia (present-day Ninotsminda district, Samtskhe-Javakheti region, Georgia). It was named after the village of Goreloye in Tavria from whence they came. It was the capital village of the Caucasian Doukhobors and site of the Sirotskiy Dom (“Orphans Home”), the residence of the 19th century Doukhobor leaders (present-day Museum of Lukeria Kalmykova). In the 1890’s, the village name was altered to Gorelovka (Гореловка). In the Soviet era, the village collective farm flourished and specialized in cheese production. In 1997, the village formed the Kolkhoz Dukhoborets (“Doukhobor Collective Farm”) and the Society of Russian Doukhobors Residing in Georgia. In 2007, the Doukhobor population immigrated to Tambov, Russia and today the population is primarily Armenian. Among the Armenians, the village is known as Aragilneri Gyugh or “stork village” because of the many storks that nest atop the power poles. [41° 13' 4" N - 43° 41' 23" E]
