Novo-Spasovka
In 1847, Doukhobor exiles established the village of Novo-Spasskoye (Ново-Спасское) near the Shamkhor River in the Kedabek district of Elizavetpol province, Russia (present-day Gadabay district, Azerbaijan). The name, derived from their village of origin in Tavria, means “New Spasskoye”. In the 1890’s, it was altered to Novo-Spasovka (Ново-Спасовка). Among the local Azeri, it was known as Khunus (Хунус), meaning “to gather” or “to leave behind” in Turkic. In the Soviet era, the village was organized as a collective farm. In the 1990’s and 2000’s, the Doukhobor population was depleted by emigration to Russia and today the population is primarily Azeri. [40° 37' 0" N - 45° 54' 0" E]
