Golitsyno

District: Gadabay
Province: Gadabay
Country: Azerbaijan

In 1847, Doukhobor exiles established the village of Novo-Troitskoye (Ново-Тройцкое) in the Kedabek district of Elizavetpol province, Russia (present-day Gadabay district, Azerbaijan). The name, derived from their village of origin in Tavria, means “New Troitskoye”. Among the local Azeri, it was known as Gyunesh (Гюнеш), meaning “sun” in Turkic. Following the Doukhobor emigration to Canada in 1899, Azeri peasants resettled the village, which was renamed Golitsyno (Голицыно) after Prince Grigory Golitsyn (1835-1907), Chief Head of the Civil Administration of the Caucasus from 1896 to 1904. The village was destroyed in the Armenian-Azerbaijani War of 1918-1922. [40° 37' N - 45° 52' E]
