Verbochki

District: Arpacay
Province: Kars
Country: Turkey

This broad, high mountain plateau was centrally located along the Kars River between the Doukhobor villages of the Shuragel and Zarishat districts of Kars province, Russia (present-day Arpacay district, Kars province, Turkey). Through one corner of it ran a crystal clear stream from a natural spring nearby. Along this stream there were thirteen tall willow trees planted in a straight row. According to Doukhobor tradition, they were planted by Christ and the Apostles. For this reason, they named it Verbochki (Вербочки), an affectionate form of the Russian term verbi, meaning “willows”. It was also known as Vozle Verbochek (Возле Вербочек) meaning “near the willows” in Russian. The Kars Doukhobors met at this sacred site to celebrate festivals and hold prayer meetings.
