Pokrovskoye

District: Arran
Province: Saskatchewan
Country: Canada

In 1899, Doukhobors from Tiflis, Russia established the village of Pokrovka (Покровка) on the Swan River in the Arran district of Saskatchewan. It was named after Pokrov, the festival of the “Intercession” held by the Doukhobors on October 1st to celebrate the protection and intercession of the Virgin Mary. According to tradition, the villagers contributed less funds to the communal treasury than other villages. In derision, Doukhobor leader Peter "Lordly" Verigin called them "idlers" and renamed the village Nedokhvatnoye (Недохватное) or Nedokhvatovo (Недохватово) meaning “insufficient” in Old Russian. The village bore this derogatory name for several years until it was renamed Pokrovskoye (Покровское), a more formal rendering of the original name. In 1907, the village was relocated to a new site three miles south. It was abandoned by 1917 as villagers relocated to individual homesteads or to British Columbia.
