Kouklia

District: Famagusta
Province: Famagusta
Country: Cyprus

In August 1898, 100 Doukhobor refugees from Tiflis, Russia leased a 129 acre farm on a sharecrop basis from the Eastern and Colonial Association in the Famagusta district of Cyprus (present-day Gazimagusta district, Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus). The Greek Cypriot name of the farm was Kouklia and the Turkish Cypriot name was Koprulu. While the farm had sufficient fresh water, it was unsuitable due to the subtropical climate and insufficient acreage for agricultural production and many Doukhobors died from famine, disease and exhaustion. Nine months later, in April 1899, the Doukhobors abandoned the farm and joined their brethren in Canada. Today Kouklia is a small agricultural village populated by Turkish Cypriots.
