Province: Zaporiz'ka
Country: Ukraine

In circa 1802, Prokofy Fedorovich Verigin, a wealthy Doukhobor, purchased a private estate of 4,606 acres along the Tashchenak River in the Melitopol district of Tavria province, Russia (present-day Zaporiz’ka province, Ukraine). It became known as Verigino (Веригино) or Khutor Verigina (Хутор Веригинa). There, he and his family operated an enormous sheep breeding enterprise, which by 1840, numbered 1,500 head. Following the exile of the Verigin family to the Caucasus in 1842, the estate was sold to Mennonite leader Johann Cornies. The original name of the estate was retained by Cornies and his descendants until at least 1919. During the Russian Revolution, the estate was largely abandoned by the Mennonite owners. By the 1930’s, it was annexed to the city of Melitopol and today forms one of its south-west suburbs. [46.81838° N - 35.29512° E]
