Vozvysheniye
In 1902, twelve Independent Doukhobor families, attracted by homestead lands and the promise of a railroad, established a village in the present Hyas district of Saskatchewan. As it was located on a rise of land, they named the village Vozvysheniye (Возвышение) meaning “elevation” or “rising ground” in Russian. For five years, the villagers lived and worked together on a cooperative basis. When the railroad failed to arrive, however, the village was disbanded in 1907 and the families relocated to individual homesteads in the Canora district. (1905 pop. 26) [SW6-34-2-W2]
